A sneak peak into the future!

Nov 14

Hey everyone, Michiel here! It has been quite a while since you’ve seen an update from us, and we’d like to fill you in on the ‘why’ exactly. I have been a judge on the Fintro Literatuurprijs 2016 this summer, an award for Dutch literature. This was a fun, albeit time consuming, thing to do. And I actually was able to be one of the few people on stage during the award ceremony – which was broadcasted on national television. So yay! We also brought Light And Shadow to a local store, as a test to see how it would do in between the hordes of other children’s books. Sadly the local store went out of business so our trial run didn’t tell us much. It told us one thing though… support your local bookshop! Because they do feel the wrath of the online mass-market. And who doesn’t love to

Trainride

May 12

Sometimes I like to share little things with you. Stuff I once wrote. Short stories, poems,... Now is one of these times.

Trainride is a little poem I wrote back in 2006 while I was sitting on the train. It reflects perfectly the mood I was in at that time, trying to (mentally) fight my way out of the downward spiral I was in at that time. I'm glad to report that life is great now 🙂
Will it win an awesome-poetry-price? No, of course not. But it's a little thingie I wrote... enjoy!

Slowly moving scenery.

Books, lost and found.
Random Starbucks bill.
Virginia import.

The world on wheels.
Captured in a moment.
Remembered, by nobody.

Drive, train, drive.

Damn.

Connection lost.

I Am What I Am

May 03

Sometimes I like to share little things with you. Stuff I once wrote. Short stories, poems,... Now is one of these times.

I Am What I Am is a little poem I wrote back in 2011 (to be precise, it was August 17!) when I was challenged online to write a poem that personified you as the objects that surrounded you at that time.
I choose not to think about it too much, and wrote the following on a whim. Just letting the creative juices flow.
Will it win an awesome-poetry-price? No, of course not. But it's a little thingie I wrote... enjoy!

I am what I am.

A book without cover.
Stories waiting to be told.

A mouth without lips.
Sounds waiting to be made.

A pair of glasses without frame.
Views waiting to be captured.

A flower without perfume.
Scents waiting to be sniffed.

A map without guidance.
Experiences waiting to be had.

A body without arms.
Hugs waiting to be given.

I am what I am.

For I shall always be, just that.

Plan Ten From Outer Space

Apr 23

Sometimes I like to share little things with you. Stuff I once wrote. Short stories, poems,... Now is one of these times.

Plan Ten is a little poem I wrote back in 2011 (to be precise, it was August 17!) when I was challenged online to write a poem with the title "Plan Ten From Outer Space".
I choose not to think about it too much, and wrote the following on a whim. Just letting the creative juices flow.
Will it win an awesome-poetry-price? No, of course not. But it's a little thingie I wrote... enjoy!

Plan one had failed.
Hugging was not the answer.

Plan two never made the cut.
You just can't make it happen with words.

Plan three was absurd.
Like anyone would fall for cardboard cupcakes.

Plan four just had everyone laughing.
As if someone would actually think about lights.

Plan five.
Well that never happened.

Plan six took off.
But crashed and burned like paper airplanes.

Plan seven had everyone shaking.
Thankfully someone turned off the power.

Plan eight threw us all off-guard.
Midgets don't make everything better.

Plan nine is what they believe in now.
But I know better than those non-believers.

Plan ten is mine and totally rocks.
Cause aliens are always the way to go!

Bring on this movie,
give me the rights.

Move over, Spielbergho,
ET from Outer Space is back!

Compassie #flp16

Apr 17

I have been selected as a member of the public jury for the #FintroLiteratuurPrijs 2016.
As one of the 100 jury members it is my task to read the shortlist and share my opinion.
Today I finished Compassie by Stephan Enter and I'd love to share my opinion with you.
Since it is a Belgian award, my reaction is written in Dutch. If you want the reaction translated to English, leave a comment and I'll put up a translation of the main points of my little review.

First reaction:
Eindelijk doorworsteld. Was ik even verkeerd...

Wow. Never expected to have so much trouble reading this one. Check the #fintroliteratuurprijs website for my review. #flp16

The Cat Pirates Revenge

Apr 12

Sometimes I like to share little things with you. Stuff I once wrote. Short stories, poems,... Now is one of these times.

Originally posted on my blog May 5th 2009:

I love Maureen Johnson, not only is she a brilliant writer but she also tweets the most amazing things! A couple of minutes ago she did a quick two-minute question answering tweet, and one of the questions she answered was this...

MAUREENJOHNSON: "@Marrije: 'What should I write a story about?' CAT PIRATES!"

The minute I saw that I was like 'let's make that a challenge for a new blog', so here we go... In the spur of the moment, and setting myself a time limit of 15 minutes... The Cat Pirates Short Story!

And that's how this little short story came to be.
Maybe a little disturbing.
But mainly quirky.

It was the moment that I felt the sun burning on my face that I realized again what happened. I had stranded on this little island yesterday night after the evil Dog Ninjas had attacked my ship with their missiles of doom they had send out from the coast of Tabitha. I had been on my way to Miss Swineflute with the Mouse Of Virginity statue she had lost earlier that month. It had took me weeks to find out where it was and I had to battle the most horrific beasts, humans I believe they are called, to be able to capture it. The pay was good though, she was handing out a whole block of cheese to the finder. But no… those damn Dog Ninjas had to attack me and steal the statue, therefor taking my block of cheese away from me as well.
My name is Patitzio by the way, Patitzio Ussi. One of the only pure blood cat pirates still alive, and now hopelessly  lonely on this sandy beach with nothing but a crate to keep me company.

I decided to explore the island some more, after all I had to do something and sitting around was nothing for a true cat pirate! An hour later I had reached the other side of the island, but still I had seen nothing but bees, flowers and sand. I don’t like bees, they sting.
It was then that I decided to go a bit deeper into the forest, and not much longer after I went into the forest I bumped into Shavi. Shavi was a snake with twelve tongues and a slimy tail, she was hot I must confess, but not exactly my type.
I walked up to her and said ‘hey snakey, ya kno a way outta this shitty island?’ on which she replied ‘I only know what thou know too! -hisssss-’.
She was clearly mental, so I walked further. Those cokesniffing snakes are worth nothing.

After a while I bumped my foot. It turned out there was a lamp randomly on the floor, and when I picked it up I kinda saw my reflection. Vain as I am I rubbed the lamp to see myself a bit better – goth knows how I looked like after all I had been trough already – and suddenly a pink ghost appeared out of the lamp. He looked pretty gay.
‘Oh honeeeey, how fa-bu-lous do you look!’. Okay, he is gay.
‘Because you are clearly fierce, I grant you two wishes!’. If I had any anti-gay feelings they had now been removed, because hey! wishes!

‘Okay ghosty, I want a private jet with a flamethrower’. He shrugged his eyes, but not much later a private jet arrived on the beach. I jumped in it, for some reason the ghost followed me, and I took off.
I flew towards Tabitha, because of course I knew how to fly and I knew my way perfectly, and when I saw the coast I suddenly noticed the airship of the evil Dog Ninjas.
I realized quickly that this was the reason I oddly requested a flamethrower to be on the jet, and I burned the damn puppies to hell.

I landed the jet, got out, and suddenly realized that by burning down the airship I had also destroyed the statue of the Mouse Of Virginity. Bummer.

This could have been the end of the story, but gays always come to the rescue so suddenly the ghost popped his head out of the jet and said ‘Darling, you still have a wishy wish!’
Long story short, I wished that the ghost turned into a hot chick and I slaughtered Miss Swineflute. I took over her castle, settled there with my hot chick, and we ended up having ten fierce pirate cat babies. Epic win.

Meet the Ninja Puppy, Nicky!

Mar 07

So who are these Ninja Puppies?
Well, the Ninja Puppies are a special breed of dogs. They are pretty small, and that's also why everyone keeps calling them puppies.
They like martial arts a lot, even though they're not that good at it since they're dogs and all, and love running after throwing stars.
Those puppies really can keep themselves busy running around these stars, fetching them, and then throwing them away again.
And like everyone else, they have a history of their own.

The Ninja Puppies used to be enslaved by Eva, the Evil Goddess Of Shadows, and were forced to work on farms along with the Pirate Cats.
They used to be good friends, these two species. Until the day they decided to free themselves of Eva.
Now, they fight. Although Nicky might be the one to turn that all around.

Nicky went on vacation to the Isle of Meow along with his parents, where he lost both of them to the shadows.
After being totally devastated by his loss, he ends up befriending Peter and goes on a quest to avenge his parents.
Small detail; Peter is a Pirate Cat. Luckily for Nicky he turns out to be an awesome Pirate Cat and the two of them become best friends.

We get to know more of Nicky and the past of his ancestors in 'Light And Shadow', so if you're curious... you know what to do!

You can find Nicky here:

Meet Peter, he’s a Pirate Cat!

Feb 20

So what is a Pirate Cat?
Well, a Pirate Cat is a special race of cats. They're kind of like pirates, and also cats.
They have enormous ships that sail the seven seas on their hunt for treasure. They're fond of all those shiny little objects, these rascals.
They also like to eat. A lot.
And like everyone else, they have a history of their own.

The Pirate Cats used to be enslaved by Eva, the Evil Goddess Of Shadows, and were forced to work on farms along with the Ninja Puppies.
They used to be good friends, these two species. Until the day they decided to free themselves of Eva.
Now, they fight. Although Peter might be the one to turn that all around.

Peter is a descendant of these famous Pirate Cats, and is one of the few real Pirate Cats alive nowadays.
He has however left his sense of adventure behind, and decided to spend the rest of his days on the Isle of Meow.
There he lives a peaceful life of his own, sleeping a lot, walking the shore, sleeping some more.
Peter is also Nicky's best friend, and Nicky... well, he's a Ninja Puppy.

We get to know more of Peter and the past of his ancestors in 'Light And Shadow', so if you're curious... you know what to do!

You can find Peter here:
